From the City of Grapevine website concerning backflow prevention:
Backflow and Cross-Connection
The goal and objective for the City of Grapevine’s Backflow Prevention and Cross Connection Control Program is to protect the public water supply from contamination by an external foreign source. In order to accomplish this goal, multiple City Departments are working together.
Inspections
The City of Grapevine Development Services Department inspects new installations on both commercial and residential facilities for potential sources of contamination. The City of Grapevine Public Works Department conducts inspections on existing systems and performs on-going monitoring.

Now let’s take a closer look at those regulations.
This all relates to the dangers of back flow, which is the reversal of water flow in a city’s water system. If backflow occurs, contaminated water can flow from commercial and residential properties back to the Grapevine potable water supply, causing a health hazard for Grapevine residents. This potential health risk if avoided by annual testing of backflow devices, and by continued monitoring of all backflow device repairs and installations.
Can backflow happen in Grapevine? Most definitely! Anytime there is a sudden drop in water pressure, backflow can occur, and that drop in water pressure can happen when there is a major fire, when a water main busts open, or for a number of other reasons.
These repairs, backflow inspections, and installations must be conducted by licensed and certified backflow testing companies, and a list of those companies is available through the City of Grapevine website.
Who must be inspected for backflow prevention?
All commercial buildings must have an annual inspection of the backflow preventer. In addition, all residential properties with irrigation must be inspected. Cases are reviewed on a case-by-case business with regards to new construction. If you are in doubt we strongly urge you to call the City of Grapevine Services Department for more information.
How do these backflow devices work?
A typical backflow preventer is a valve which senses a drop in water pressure and automatically closes the water flow system, prohibiting contaminated water from flowing in the wrong direction. These can be single valve systems, double check valve systems, or vacuum pressure systems, depending upon the size of the water usage at that location. They are easily tested by use of a test cock, and the entire inspection can be done within an hour.
