Backflow preventers come in many shapes and sizes, but their purpose is always the same: to stop contaminated water from flowing in reverse and polluting the potable water supply in your town or city.
As stated earlier, backflow preventers come in many shapes and sizes, and they are also known by many names including reduced pressure zone assembly, vacuum breakers, dual checks, check valves, double check valves, double check detector assemblies, text cocks, reduced pressure detector assemblies, back flow preventers and several others. The name is unimportant; what it does is crucial to all home and business owners.
Consider this: under normal conditions, water flows to your home or business by way of water pressure applied at the source (mail water supply). All is well as long as the system works that way…but….what if there is a major fire, and water is pumped from water mains to that fire, thus reducing the water pressure to the homes in that area? If that happens, the water pressure reduces, as stated before, and in some cases the water pressure will actually reverse, meaning there is more pressure at the home end of the system than at the source end….meaning contaminated water will flow back towards its source.
And then we all have a problem!
This is such a problem of major magnitude that there is actually a federal law requiring that home owners and business owners not only have backflow preventers on their water system but that they have those backflow preventers inspected annually to guarantee a safe and unpolluted water system.
And that annual inspection and possible repairs to your back flow preventer is your responsibility.
