From the City of West Worth Village website regarding West Worth Village backflow prevention:
“Annual testing of backflow prevention assemblies (those installed to protect against health hazards) or differential pressure gauges is to occur no more than 12 months from the last test date. 3. A tester’s license is based on the testing procedures described in the University of Southern California’s 10th edition manual. These procedures are expected to be used when testing backflow prevention assemblies.”
Now let’s take a closer look at those requirements so you are completely clear regarding your responsibilities as a property owner in West Worth Village, Texas. If you have questions after you read this article, call City Backflow Testing at (817) 996-2000.
Annual backflow testing
By West Worth Village law, backflow testing must be conducted yearly. What the above passage does not mention is who is required to have the backflow testing done. That list is available at the Public Works Department in West Worth Village. Generally speaking, backflow devices and backflow testing are required at high-risk facilities, and those are usually commercial and industrial properties. It is rare that a residential property would require backflow installation, but it does happen if irrigation is involved or there is an unusually high water usage at a residential property.
Licensed backflow tester
Even though backflow is essentially a plumbing situation/problem, not all plumbers are trained, licensed, and certified to be a backflow tester. Each state offers certification and licensing testing for backflow specialists, and until they pass that testing they are not allowed to conduct backflow installation, backflow testing, or backflow repair. In addition, only certified backflow parts can be used in any backflow repair.
Also, each city requires a specific license to perform backflow work in that city, so a licensed backflow tester in Fort Worth would also require a license to work in West Worth Village.
10th Edition Manual
The University of Southern California’s 10th Edition is the bible of backflow testing. When a backflow tester arrives at your property, these steps are taken:
Notify- Notify the customer we are here for testing
- Identify- Make sure serial number is correct and that we have the right assembly
- Inspect- Make sure there are 4 test ports and 2 Shut off handles
- Observe- Attach test equipment and follow proper testing procedures for this assembly
- Test Reports- Enter values for the assemblies
- Turn in all test Reports to the local water Purveyor or City
A backflow prevention city
The result of all this is a potable water system which is healthy and safe. These procedures, and these regulations, are fairly standard across the United States, all stemming from the Clean Water Act of 1972, so should you move, and become involved in a commercial activity in another city/state, you will be looking at basically the same backflow requirements.
