What are backflow devices? We will attempt to answer that question in layman’s terms in this article. If you have further questions, call us at (817) 996-2000. We are City Backflow Testing, and backflow is our livelihood.
We start with the question: what is backflow?
In layman’s terms, backflow is the reversal of water flow in the water distribution system. Instead of potable water flowing from a city water supply to homes and businesses, when backflow occurs the contaminated water will flow from homes and businesses back into the city’s potable water supply. Without getting too technical, this happens because of a severe drop in water pressure within the system. Obviously this is a huge health concern and it must be avoided/prevented. Thus the invention of backflow devices!
What does a backflow device do?
A backflow device essentially allows water to flow in only one direction, the direction it was meant to flow. They are usually one-way valves, simple mechanisms which allow healthy water to flow only in the direction it was meant to flow. Only backflow parts and backflow devices made by approved companies, like Ames or FEBCO, are allowed, by law, to be used.
Which properties must have backflow devices?
Not all commercial/residential properties are required to have a backflow device. Each property is considered by the Public Works Department in a city on a case-by-case basis, and determination is made based on water flow volume and the number of cross connections used on that property. To find out if your property is required to have backflow protection, contact your city’s Public Works Department.
Who may install backflow devices?
Although this is essentially a plumbing job, not all plumbers are trained and certified to do backflow inspections, backflow repairs, and backflow installations. Backflow experts must undergo strict instruction and must pass backflow testing before they are issued a backflow certificate by the state. In addition, every city requires that a backflow expert become licensed by that city. Again, check with your city for a list of licensed and certified backflow inspectors.
How often must backflow testing be done? Annually! The original notice is sent out by the city. After that, it is up to the backflow company to notify their customers when backflow testing is due.
What is done during a backflow test?
This is the testing procedure we use at City Backflow Testing:
Notify- Notify the customer we are here for testing
- Identify- Make sure serial number is correct and that we have the right assembly
- Inspect- Make sure there are 4 test ports and 2 Shut off handles
- Observe- Attach test equipment and follow proper testing procedures for this assembly
- Test Reports- Enter values for the assemblies
- Turn in all test Reports to the local water Purveyor or City
How much does it all cost? It depends on the amount of work required, and it varies from company to company, but plan on somewhere in the $100-$200 range for backflow testing. Obviously, if backflow repairs are necessary, other charges will be added.
