Did you know there are over thirty million pathogen illnesses, each year, in the United States caused by unhealthy and unclean water? It is true. Now, it is also true that a large majority of these illnesses are not life-threatening, but still that is a whole lot of sick caused by something we just take for granted. Like the sun rising in the east and setting in the west, we just expect our drinking water to be safe and yet, ask the people of Flint, Michigan, how those expectations worked out.
The crusade for safe, clean drinking water began in 1972 with the passage of the Clean Water Act. That act, and two subsequent acts passed by Congress, laid down certain guidelines which today establish water safety features in every city in the United States, and part of those guidelines deal with the issue of backflow.
What is backflow prevention?
Backflow prevention is all about not allowing backflow to happen, which means it is all about finding a way to prevent polluted water from flowing back into a city’s potable water supply. Backflow prevention is a set of guidelines which, when followed, guarantees that back flow will not occur.
What are the backflow guidelines?
At City Backflow Testing, we use USC 10th Addition Testing Procedures:
- Notify- Notify the customer we are here for testing
- Identify- Make sure serial number is correct and that we have the right assembly
- Inspect- Make sure there are 4 test ports and 2 Shut off handles
- Observe- Attach test equipment and follow proper testing procedures for this assembly
- Test Reports- Enter values for the assemblies
- Turn in all test Reports to the local water Purveyor or City
So let’s break this down and clarify it all for you.
Backflow laws cover the testing, installation, and repair of backflow devices. They clearly outline what should be done, where it should be reported, and which backflow parts are used. It also describes the strenuous training backflow testers must undertake in order to be licensed and certified in any city. Backflow inspection, backflow repair, backflow testing of backflow prevention devices, and backflow installation is not something which can be trusted to just a plumber; that plumber must be certified, by the state, in backflow prevention technique.
How do you know who is certified in Roanoke? Call the Public Works Department in Roanoke and ask them for a list of certified backflow testers. They will be happy to share that list with you. Once you have the list you can call a company on that list with every confidence that they know how to combat and prevent backflow.
