What are backflow specialists?
Backflow specialist are technicians who are trained and certified in backflow inspection, backflow repair, and backflow installation, which leads most people to ask this question: what is backflow?
Backflow is a situation where the polluted water in your house and on your property actually reverses flow and flows back towards your city’s clean water supply. It once, many years ago, was a fairly common occurrence leading, as you would imagine, to quite a few illnesses. Since 1972 and the passage of the Clean Water Act, however, guidelines and regulations were established governing backflow and thus the birth of backflow specialists in the United States.
Who are backflow specialists?
Backflow specialists are those who have passed rigorous schooling and testing on backflow. Certification usually consists of passing a state practical test plus a state computer test. It should be noted that the testing gives a person state certification. Local certification and licensing is also required for each city a backflow specialist works in.
How can you find a backflow specialist in your city?
It’s as simple as visiting your city’s website or calling either the Public Works Department of the Water Department. They will have a list of licensed and certified backflow specialists. Please not that although this is primarily a plumbing position, simply being a plumber does not qualify someone as a backflow specialist; city and state certification is necessary for someone to be labeled a backflow specialist/backflow tester/backflow installer.
What does backflow service look like? What does it entail?
A backflow specialist will come out to your property and inspect your backflow parts. On all devices there are test ports. This is a fairly simple testing procedure completed within an hour. After the testing is completed, and assuming all is well, the results are then reported to your city’s governing office. If repairs are made, more reporting is made to the governing office.
This testing occurs once each year, and is usually only required by high-use properties like commercial properties or those using irrigation. Each property is consider by city officials on a case-by-case basis, so to find out if your property requires backflow testing, simply call the governing department in your city. As for the filing of administrative forms, your backflow specialist is required to do it. You pay him or her to properly file all required forms with the city.
