For the uninitiated, that information may appear to be a bit confusing. Let’s take a closer look at it and determine what your responsibilities are as a citizen of Haltom City, Texas. What is cross connection?
From the National Plumber’s Association, this definition of cross connection:
A cross connection is a point in a plumbing system where the potable water supply is connected to a non-potable source. Briefly, a cross connection exists whenever the drinking water system is or could be connected to any non-potable source (plumbing fixture, equipment used in any plumbing system). Pollutants or contaminants can enter the safe drinking water system through uncontrolled cross connections when backflow occurs.
And what is backflow?
Backflow occurs when the water pressure which forces water from the City water supply to your home suddenly drops. This causes a reverse pressure which could force contaminated water back into the City water supply.
And so we have backflow preventers and backflow inspections.
For the City of Haltom City, and for most cities across the country, backflow inspection is required annually on all commercial buildings as well as private residences where irrigation occurs. Depending on the city, that list of private residences may or may not be more stringent than that of Haltom City.
The backflow testing and inspection must be conducted annually by a licensed and certified backflow tester. Forms are filled out and filed at the city’s water or health department. If repairs must be made to the backflow devices, only certified and approved backflow devices can be used as replacements, and a list of those approved devices is also available through the Haltom City website.
Now relax if you are a property owner of a commercial building. Relief is just one phone call away, a phone call to a registered testing company approved by Haltom City. Once you make that phone call, the testing company will arrange for testing, file the proper paperwork, and notify you each year when the annual testing is due.
