A common concern for homeowners with irrigation systems is backflow preventer leaking.
Backflow preventers are used to prevent the dangerous health consequences which occur when irrigation water suddenly reverses flow and flows from the home to the potable water supply. This can occur for a number of reasons, most often because there has been a sudden, huge need for the water supply, as in the opening of hydrants to fight a fire. When that happens, water pressure within the water system suddenly drops, and if it drops below a certain level, the water can actually reverse flow, an occurrence known as backflow.
To prevent that from happening, backflow preventers are used. These are simply mechanisms, usually valves, which will shut down if the flow of water reverses.
Backflow preventer leaking occurs usually because debris such as dirt or sand will wedge into the seal of the relief valve, thus preventing it from shutting all the way. When this happens, a backflow technician will need to take apart the valve seat and clean it. If this is a recurring problem, a filter will need to be installed on the domestic water source, thus preventing sand and dirt from causing problems. The filter needs to be installed prior to the backflow preventer to eliminate debris from entering that relief valve.
Does all of this sound complicated?
It can be!
Does all of this sound expensive?
It can be, especially if you continue to have filtering problems.
Is it worth the money to have it done correctly?
It’s not only worth the money but it is required by most state laws and federal laws.
The proper installation and maintenance of a backflow system is required in most states, and should that backflow prevention system fail, and should the potable water supply become polluted, it is the homeowner’s responsibility and liability.
So get this job done!
