What is backflow?
In plumbing, backflow occurs when there is a substantial change in water pressure which causes water further down the line in a system to be sucked back through the pipes.
Imagine you are on the 10th floor of an apartment building filling a sink with a hose, and the hose is submerged in the water. Then out on the street the fire department engages a fire hydrant which sucks water not just from upstream, but from the water in the pipes of your apartment building – because of the major pressure change, there is no longer enough water pressure to hold the water up to the 10th floor. Now, water from your sink has contaminated everyone in the area’s drinking water supply. This is why we are required to have backflow preventers which follow plumbing code.
And Ames backflow preventers guard against that happening.
How does a backflow preventer work?
Backflow devices, valves and pressure breakers, work to spring into action once a drop in water pressure is noticed. Sensors within the backflow devices immediately shut down valves, preventing water from reversing direction in the water pipes. Once the water pressure is stabilized, and water is flowing in the proper direction once again, the valves will open and the water system will once again work the way it was designed to work.
All of this happens without the average citizen even being aware. Building codes and plumbing codes in all major cities require that backflow devices are installed and, not only installed, but inspected annually in case they are in need of repair. This happens with all commercial buildings and generally with all multi-unit housing like apartments and hotels. Licensed backflow testers are required to conduct yearly inspections on these backflow systems and to report their inspection findings to the local authorities. This is all part of a Federal plan to assure safe potable water throughout the United States.
