What is backflow?
Backflow is the reversal of water flow in a city’s water system. Typically water flows from the city’s potable water supply to homes and businesses, but when backflow occurs, contaminated water can flow back towards the city’s water supply. This can happen if there is a sudden drop in water pressure like, say, when a major fire occurs and fire hydrants are opened.
How is backflow prevented?
Never fear, backflow is preventable, and it is preventable by using backflow preventers, which are mechanisms/devices which only allow water to flow in one direction, the correct direction. Ever since the Clean Water Act in the 1970s, Federal law has required that cities across the U.S. have backflow regulations in place, and those regulations usually read something like this:
- All backflow devices on commercial buildings must be inspected annually
- Only approved backflow devices can be used
- All testing, installation, and repair of backflow devices must be done by licensed and certified backflow inspectors for backflow inspection.
- And some residential buildings must also follow these guidelines, especially those with irrigation systems.
And so it is with Hurst backflow prevention regulations! Check the Hurst City Website for a list of approved backflow inspectors, and make sure you backflow system is operating properly so that you don’t face fines for non-compliance to the laws.
Misconceptions about backflow and backflow inspections
Although this is, in fact, a plumbing situation, hiring just any plumber will not do when meeting your responsibilities regarding backflow; nor is it allowed to work on your own backflow system. You must hire a trained backflow inspector to do the job.
Another misconception is that backflow inspections by a backflow tester are expensive. Call us for our rates; trust us that inspections are not nearly as expensive as city fines.
